Sonya Rapoport’s work Shoe-Field Book (pictured above) will be included in the exhibition Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, curated by Douglas Dodds.
Inspired by the landmark Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition of 1968 and the creation of the Computer Arts Society soon afterwards, this display celebrates 50 years and more of computer-generated art. Highlights include works by Frieder Nake, Vera Molnar, Manfred Mohr, Harold Cohen, Roman Verostko, Casey Reas and others who have used computers and systems to explore aspects of chance and control in their work, from the 1960s to the present.
– Exhibition Text, 2018
Shoe-Field (1982-87) is one of Sonya Rapoport’s most engaging and playful computer-mediated interactive installations. Rapoport created a “digital book art” edition that included images of shoes used in the installation, an explanatory text, printouts of “Shoe Psyche Plots”, and a floppy disk with the Shoe-Field program, complete with instructions.
Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers at the Victoria and Albert Museum opens on Saturday, July 7th and runs through Sunday, November 18th, 2018.
